- ACT FOUR
-
- FADE IN:
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Picard, Riker, Data, Beverly, Troi, and Worf are present. Keller is
- shown on the viewscreen. Riker, Beverly and Troi are visibly shocked
- by Keller's news.
-
- KELLER
- Governor Lang suffered a vote of no confidence from our legislature,
- which removed him from office and named me as his successor.
-
- PICARD
- I see. Well, in that case I wish to tell you some very good news,
- Governor.
-
- KELLER
- News of the inquiry into the incident involving Doctor Crusher?
-
- PICARD
- Not exactly. We have yet to reach the starbase where the inquiry will
- take place. But Doctor Crusher, who has been studying Phillips'
- syndrome since we left your planet, has made an amazing discovery -
- she has developed a cure for the disease that is compatible with your
- level of technology.
-
- KELLER
- So?
-
- Beverly rises from her seat and stands next to Picard.
-
- BEVERLY
- This means that you can synthesize the medicine needed to cure all
- who suffer from the disease, without the use of outside technology.
-
- KELLER
- Frankly, Captain, I am displeased by these last-minute theatrics. If
- you are serious about conducting an inquiry into the Doctor's
- conduct, then do it.
-
- PICARD
- Governor, I assure you that these are not theatrics. My staff have
- convinced me that her discovery is a genuine breakthrough.
-
- KELLER
- Captain, I await the results of Starfleet's inquiry into the Doctor's
- conduct. In the meantime I wish no further communication from you.
-
- Keller closes the channel; his image is replaced by the star field.
-
- PICARD
- Not the reception I'd hoped for.
-
- RIKER
- The man's a fool. We've just told him how to save hundreds of lives.
- And he ignored us.
-
- TROI
- He used us to further his own political agenda, to drive Denarra
- Three further away from the rest of the Federation. Now that he's
- done that, he wants nothing more to do with us.
-
- PICARD
- If only there were a way to get past him. Governor Lang would be more
- receptive.
-
- BEVERLY
- Captain, when I spoke to Mrs. Lang, she was at their home. I wonder
- if we could contact her and her husband there?
-
- WORF
- The necessary information must be in the communications logs. I will
- search for it.
-
- PICARD
- Hopefully they won't have been evicted in the power struggle.
-
- Picard notices that Beverly looks very anxious.
-
- PICARD (to Beverly)
- Don't worry, Beverly, we'll see to it that your outstanding effort
- isn't wasted.
-
- Beverly smiles.
-
- WORF
- Captain, I believe I can contact the Lang residence now.
-
- PICARD
- Make it so, Mister Worf.
-
- Lang, casually dressed, appears on the screen.
-
- LANG
- Captain! I am surprised that you were able to find me here in exile.
-
- PICARD
- I am relieved that we were able to, Governor.
-
- Lang is joined on the screen by Audrey.
-
- LANG
- As you probably know, I have been kicked out of office. There is
- little to stand in the way of secession now that Keller is in charge.
- My family is fine; we are being left alone. Keller didn't even take
- the transmitter which I had at home for emergency use, otherwise I
- wouldn't be talking to you now.
-
- PICARD
- I spoke with Senator Keller just now. I was attempting to reach you.
- I wanted to tell you that Doctor Crusher has made an important
- discovery - with great implications for your family and many others.
-
- Lang and Audrey look anxious, anticipating what the news might be.
-
- LANG
- What is that?
-
- PICARD
- Doctor Crusher has developed a means by which your people can produce
- the drug needed to cure your daughter's disease, with no outside
- technology required.
-
- Lang and Audrey are overjoyed. They hug each other for a moment.
-
- LANG
- That's wonderful news. Doctor, congratulations and thank you!
-
- BEVERLY
- Your thanks are premature, Governor. Senator Keller is not
- interested.
-
- LANG
- Of course. Now that he's gained power, he's free to do just as he
- pleases.
-
- AUDREY
- He used Sarah to get what he wanted, and now he condemns her to
- death!
-
- BEVERLY
- He used all of us.
-
- All are silent for a moment.
-
- AUDREY
- Is there no way for you to help us, Captain?
-
- PICARD
- Indeed, Mrs. Lang, I believe that there is. Our earlier incident
- occurred because I refused to let Doctor Crusher help you. Now, given
- that the Doctor's cure is compatible with the technology of Denarra
- Three, I will allow her to assist you.
-
- LANG
- But what about Keller?
-
- PICARD
- What about him? You are Federation citizens, requesting urgent
- medical assistance. He has no right to interfere.
-
- BEVERLY
- They may not be Federation citizens for very long.
-
- PICARD
- Then we must act now. Governor, the Enterprise will head for Denarra
- Three at the best possible speed. Once there, we will do whatever it
- takes to cure your daughter.
-
- LANG
- Thank you, Captain. I will do what I can to spread word of Doctor
- Crusher's discovery. It might force Keller to take notice.
-
- PICARD
- Excellent. I'm not going to inform Senator Keller of our plans, since
- he might seek some form of retaliation against you. But I recommend
- that you be prepared. If he does find out that we're coming, he could
- move against you.
-
- LANG
- Understood. I'll keep you informed of developments here, Captain.
-
- PICARD
- Good. Enterprise out.
-
- The image of the Langs is replaced by the star field.
-
- PICARD (to Riker)
- Commander, earlier you somehow convinced Starbase 117 that we needed
- to slow down, giving Doctor Crusher and Mister Data time to work
- their magic. How would you like to do an encore?
-
- RIKER
- Convince them that for some reason we now need to return to Denarra
- Three?
-
- PICARD
- Exactly.
-
- RIKER
- I'm sure I'll think of something, sir.
-
- EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE
-
- The Enterprise flies at warp speed.
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Riker enters from the turbolift. Worf is at his station. Troi and
- Beverly are seated on opposite sides of the Captain's chair. Riker
- seats himself in between them.
-
- TROI (to Beverly)
- How long would it take them to synthesize the drug following your
- prescription?
-
- BEVERLY
- A day, maybe two. There's nothing difficult about it.
-
- RIKER
- Let's hope they get the chance.
-
- WORF
- Commander, we are being hailed by Denarra Three.
-
- RIKER
- Governor Lang?
-
- WORF
- Negative. This is from Governor Keller's office.
-
- RIKER
- Alert the Captain.
-
- Picard enters from his ready room. Riker stands.
-
- RIKER
- We're being hailed by Governor Keller, sir.
-
- PICARD
- On screen.
-
- Keller appears on the screen. Picard stands next to Riker.
-
- KELLER
- Enterprise, we have learned that you are en route to Denarra Three.
- You do not, I repeat, do not have permission to approach the planet.
-
- PICARD
- We are responding to an urgent request for medical assistance,
- Governor.
-
- KELLER
- From whom?
-
- PICARD
- From Governor and Mrs. Lang. They have asked us to provide life-
- saving treatment for their daughter.
-
- Keller is momentarily taken aback by the news of the Langs'
- involvement.
-
- KELLER
- You do not have my permission to help the Langs, or to approach
- Denarra Three.
-
- PICARD
- Given the circumstances, I don't see that your permission is
- required.
-
- KELLER
- Such interference would be the last straw; we would have no choice
- but to secede from the Federation. Your career would be ruined,
- Picard, along with the Doctor's.
-
- PICARD
- Secede then. I'll take my chances. But I will not allow you to let
- that girl die.
-
- KELLER
- I'll have them arrested. You'll never find them.
-
- PICARD
- I will stay in orbit until I do.
-
- KELLER
- We don't have your sophisticated weaponry, Enterprise, but we will
- fight you every way we can.
-
- Keller closes the channel in disgust; the screen goes blank.
-
- RIKER
- Shall we warn the Langs?
-
- PICARD
- Yes, Number One. Mister Worf, open a channel.
-
- Governor Land and Audrey appear on the screen.
-
- PICARD
- Governor, Senator Keller has ordered us to stay away from Denarra
- Three. I have refused to abide by his wishes. He has threatened to
- have you and your family arrested. I think you should seek refuge
- elsewhere.
-
- LANG
- We have already made some arrangements, Captain.
-
- Audrey exits from the screen.
-
- PICARD
- Best not to tell me about them, Governor. Our communications may be
- monitored.
-
- LANG
- Understood. I am not able to take this transmitter with me. I will
- contact you when I am able.
-
- PICARD
- I understand. Don't worry, Governor, we'll find you, wherever you
- are, even if you are unable to contact us.
-
- INT. GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCE
-
- Audrey enters the room where Lang is speaking to Picard, who can be
- seen on the screen.
-
- LANG
- I imagine you will, Captain.
-
- AUDREY
- I have Sarah ready, Richard.
-
- LANG
- Good. Captain, we will say good-bye for now.
-
- PICARD
- Good-bye Governor, and good luck.
-
- Lang turns off the transmitter and the screen goes blank.
-
- LANG
- Let's go. There's not a moment to lose.
-
- There is a loud knock at the door. Lang and Audrey look at each
- other, and are clearly frightened.
-
- EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE
-
- The Enterprise slows from warp speed to impulse.
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Riker, Troi, Beverly, Data, and Worf are present. Picard enters from
- his ready room.
-
- RIKER
- Coming into orbit around Denarra Three, Captain.
-
- PICARD
- Good. Still no word from Governor Lang?
-
- WORF
- That's correct, sir.
-
- PICARD
- Will, we need to find the Governor and his family. How should we
- proceed?
-
- RIKER
- We can't do much from up here; there's no way to single them out
- using the sensors. I think we have to go down to the surface and look
- for them. It should be easy for our people to blend in with the local
- population.
-
- BEVERLY
- We need to move quickly. Governor Keller knows that we are headed
- here. I fear for the Langs' safety.
-
- PICARD
- Agreed. Will, I want you and Counselor Troi to beam down in the
- vicinity of the Governor's residence. Try to locate the Langs or, if
- they have been arrested, learn where they might be held. We'll add
- more search teams as needed.
-
- RIKER
- Sounds good. Let's go, Deanna.
-
- Riker and Troi exit to the turbolift.
-
- WORF
- Sir, we are being hailed by Denarra Three.
-
- PICARD
- Governor Lang?
-
- WORF
- No sir, it is from the Governor's office. It must be Governor Keller.
-
- Picard and Beverly exchange worried looks.
-
- PICARD
- Ignore him. Let's keep him guessing. If we acknowledge, he'll know
- we've arrived. If he knows we're here and he has the Langs in
- custody, there's no telling what he might do.
-
- FADE OUT.
-
- END OF ACT FOUR
-
-
-
- ACT FIVE
-
- FADE IN:
-
- EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE
-
- The Enterprise is in orbit around Denarra Three.
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Picard, Data, Beverly, Worf, and Geordi are present.
-
- PICARD
- Has Governor Keller given up yet?
-
- WORF
- No sir, he continues to hail us periodically.
-
- RIKER (V.O.)
- Riker to Enterprise.
-
- PICARD
- Go ahead, Will. What have you found?
-
- INT. CORRIDOR OUTSIDE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
-
- Riker and Troi are huddled against a wall. They are dressed in
- Denarran-style clothes.
-
- RIKER
- The Lang's residence is under guard; they are not there. No clue yet
- as to their whereabouts. We're now just outside the Governor's
- office. A great deal of confusion here; people coming and going
- constantly.
-
- PICARD (V.O.)
- Be careful. Remember, Mister O'Brien is standing by to beam you out
- on a moment's notice if needed.
-
- RIKER
- Aye, sir. Riker out.
-
- TROI (to Riker)
- The mood here is difficult to describe.
-
- RIKER
- How do you mean?
-
- TROI
- I sense a jumble of emotions. Some people are very upset; others
- jubilant. Whatever is happening, it is clear that this is no normal
- day.
-
- RIKER
- Anything to do with us?
-
- TROI
- No, I don't think so. Let's move down the corridor; something is
- going on just a few doors down.
-
- They walk down the corridor. A door opens and Keller emerges. He
- sees Riker and Troi and flies into a rage.
-
- KELLER
- You!
-
- Keller rushes at Riker and delivers a punch to Riker's chest. Riker
- staggers slightly. Keller lunges at him again. Riker lands a punch
- that knocks Keller to the ground, apparently unconscious.
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Picard, Data, Beverly, Worf, and Geordi are present.
-
- GEORDI
- We have twenty-five teams waiting to beam down, Captain. Each has
- been assigned a target area in or near the capital.
-
- PICARD
- Good. We'll give Commander Riker and Counselor Troi a few more
- minutes.
-
- RIKER (V.O.)
- Riker to Picard.
-
- PICARD
- Go ahead, Will.
-
- RIKER (V.O.)
- Sir, I suggest that you reply to Governor Keller's hail.
-
- PICARD
- Why should I do that, Will?
-
- RIKER (V.O.)
- Please Captain, just trust me.
-
- PICARD
- On screen, Mister Worf.
-
- Lang, Riker, and Troi appear on the screen.
-
- PICARD
- Governor Lang! What a pleasant surprise.
-
- LANG
- Same here, Captain. After you didn't answer, I was afraid that
- something had happened to you.
-
- PICARD
- Sorry Governor, I assumed the hail was from Governor Keller.
-
- LANG
- I exposed Governor Keller's plan to suppress news of Doctor Crusher's
- cure. The resulting condemnation eroded his support. He has been
- forced to resign. I have, temporarily at least, been put in charge.
-
- PICARD
- Excellent.
-
- RIKER
- We just ran into Keller in the hall. He was, shall I say, not very
- happy to see us.
-
- Riker rubs his side, where he took the punch.
-
- LANG
- Captain, if you could transmit to me the details of Doctor Crusher's
- discovery, I will give it to our scientists, who are eager to get to
- work producing the drug.
-
- PICARD (to Worf)
- Make it so, Mister Worf.
-
- RIKER
- We're ready to beam up, Captain.
-
- LANG
- I hope that you'll remain in orbit for a while, to view the results
- of our efforts to synthesize Doctor Crusher's cure.
-
- PICARD
- Absolutely. We wouldn't miss it.
-
- EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE
-
- The Enterprise is in orbit around Denarra Three.
-
- PICARD (V.O.)
- Captain's log, stardate 46099.7. The Denarrans have synthesized the
- drug needed to save the lives of hundreds of their people, using the
- technique discovered by Doctor Crusher and Mister Data. We have been
- invited to a ceremony honoring them for their accomplishment. As part
- of the ceremony, the Governor's daughter will be the first to receive
- the medicine.
-
- INT. GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
-
- Preparations are in their final stages for the ceremony. Among those
- present is Senator DAVIDSON, another pro-secessionist. Senator
- Keller's AIDE approaches him.
-
- AIDE
- Senator Davidson, hello. Senator Keller sends his regards.
-
- DAVIDSON
- How is he holding up?
-
- AIDE
- While he is displeased by the current turn of events, I assure you he
- is as busy and as determined as ever.
-
- DAVIDSON
- I'm glad that he won't be here to witness this pathetic spectacle.
-
- AIDE
- Just look at who we are honoring. A woman who callously disregarded
- all our traditions, who tried to poison our society with foreign
- technology.
-
- DAVIDSON
- And an android, a prime example of the technology we so abhor. Our
- society is lost. It is only a matter of time before we are re-
- absorbed by the rest of the Federation, and become indistinguishable
- from it.
-
- AIDE
- There is still one chance.
-
- DAVIDSON
- What do you mean?
-
- Doors at one end of the office open, and Governor Lang, his wife
- Audrey, and their daughter Sarah enter. They walk to the front of the
- room.
-
- LANG
- Friends, let us welcome our visitors from the U.S.S. Enterprise.
-
- The door opens again. Beverly, Data, and Picard enter and approach
- the Langs. There is a round of applause. Riker, Troi, Worf, and
- Geordi enter but remain in the crowd.
-
- LANG
- Doctor Beverly Crusher, and Lieutenant Commander Data, on behalf of
- all Denarrans, welcome. This is a great day for us. A victory has
- been gained over a disease that has tragically shortened many
- thousands of lives. And this victory has been won without
- compromising the values that our people hold dear. (a beat) That this
- day has arrived is wonderful. That we owe it all to two Starfleet
- officers is incredible. On behalf of all Denarrans, thank you both.
-
- Lang leads another round of applause. In the crowd, Troi approaches
- Worf and speaks to him over the applause.
-
- TROI
- Stay on your guard, Mister Worf. I sense some anger in this room,
- directed at Beverly and Data.
-
- WORF
- Can you pinpoint the source of these feelings, Counselor?
-
- TROI
- No, there's too much happening; strong emotions everywhere. But some
- of them are definitely very negative. Be vigilant.
-
- Worf moves around the room, looking for anything unusual, as the
- applause subsides.
-
- LANG
- My daughter has volunteered to be the first to receive this drug.
- The faith of our family in Doctor Crusher is absolute. Doctor, we
- would like to ask you to administer the drug.
-
- BEVERLY
- I am honored by this request, Governor.
-
- Beverly and Sarah step forward. A tray holding a hypo-syringe is
- brought out.
-
- LANG (to Beverly)
- Perhaps you would like to say a few words first.
-
- BEVERLY
- Thank you Governor.
-
- While Beverly speaks, Troi draws Riker, Geordi, and Worf together at
- the back of the room.
-
- TROI
- Something's not right. That man over there.
-
- Troi points to Senator Keller's aide.
-
- RIKER
- He's Senator Keller's assistant.
-
- TROI
- Yes. His emotions were very gloomy. But when the medicine was brought
- out, he underwent an enormous change. He was excited, filled with
- anticipation.
-
- RIKER
- Do you think the medicine has been tampered with?
-
- TROI
- I think it's possible.
-
- WORF
- We should interrupt the ceremony.
-
- GEORDI
- No, wait.
-
- Geordi taps his communicator.
-
- GEORDI (CONT.)
- LaForge to Enterprise.
-
- O'BRIEN (V.O.)
- Enterprise, O'Brien here.
-
- GEORDI
- Mister O'Brien, this is an emergency. I need a tricorder immediately.
-
- INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM
-
- O'Brien is at the transporter console.
-
- O'BRIEN
- Hold on, I've got to find one.
-
- O'Brien scrambles off the side of the transporter room. After looking
- in a couple of places, he finds a tricorder. He runs to the
- transporter pad.
-
- GEORDI (V.O.)
- I need you to put it down right here at my feet.
-
- O'Brien sets down the tricorder and runs back to the console.
-
- O'BRIEN
- Okay, here it comes.
-
- O'Brien frantically adjusts the controls. The tricorder shimmers and
- disappears.
-
- INT. GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
-
- The tricorder materializes at Geordi's feet. He picks it up and
- begins to use it. Fortunately no one has noticed the commotion.
- Beverly is still speaking. There is another round of applause.
- Apparently it is time for the injection.
-
- RIKER (to Geordi)
- You have about fifteen seconds before I interrupt the ceremony.
-
- Geordi works with the tricorder.
-
- GEORDI
- I have the syringe, the outer casing, hold on... I have the medicine.
- Scanning...
-
- Beverly reaches for the syringe. She picks it up and moves toward
- Sarah.
-
- RIKER
- Now, Mister LaForge!
-
- Beverly takes hold of Sarah's arm. Worf looks extremely anxious.
-
- BEVERLY
- This won't hurt a bit.
-
- Sarah smiles. Beverly raises the syringe toward Sarah's arm.
-
- GEORDI (shouting)
- Beverly, stop!
-
- The people at the front look up, shocked. Beverly lets go of Sarah's
- arm. The aide turns to leave the room in a hurry but Worf stops him
- roughly and brings him toward the front. Riker, Geordi, and Troi
- advance.
-
- RIKER
- The medicine has been tampered with. This man is guilty.
-
- Riker points to the aide. Audrey hugs Sarah. Beverly has put down
- the syringe.
-
- AIDE
- It's not true. I'm innocent.
-
- RIKER
- Commander LaForge discovered the tampering using this tricorder.
-
- Geordi holds up the tricorder.
-
- RIKER (CONT.)
- We'll leave it to you to investigate, Governor, but I predict that
- the trail will lead you to this man.
-
- TROI
- And perhaps some accomplices.
-
- EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL)
-
- The Enterprise is in orbit around Denarra Three.
-
- INT. MAIN BRIDGE
-
- Picard, Riker, Beverly, Troi, Data, Worf, and Geordi are present.
-
- RIKER
- Final preparations complete, Captain. Ready to leave orbit anytime.
-
- WORF
- Sir, we are being hailed by Governor Lang.
-
- PICARD
- On screen.
-
- Lang appears on the screen.
-
- LANG
- Good news, Captain. The medicine has been manufactured, under tight
- controls, and administered to over five hundred patients planetwide.
- People are rejoicing everywhere.
-
- PICARD
- Wonderful news, Governor.
-
- LANG
- Our investigation into the tampering has implicated Senator Keller
- and several of his aides. They will stand trial for attempted
- murder. (a beat) On a happier note, I have asked Starfleet to drop
- all plans to hold an inquiry into the earlier incident, and expressed
- our appreciation for all your help.
-
- PICARD
- I would like to say, Governor, that there may be other, similar ways
- in which the Federation could assist Denarra Three, while working
- within the constraints imposed by your society's beliefs. Better
- communication might help us find such opportunities.
-
- LANG
- We stand ready to improve such communication channels, Captain.
- While our concerns about technology remain, we see the benefits of
- continued contact with the rest of the Federation.
-
- PICARD
- Good luck, Governor.
-
- LANG
- And to you, Captain, and your crew. On behalf of my family, and all
- Denarrans, thank you.
-
- PICARD
- Enterprise out.
-
- The Governor's image is replaced by a view of the star field.
-
- RIKER
- New course laid in as you requested, sir.
-
- Picard sits down in his chair, next to Beverly. He is obviously
- pleased with the outcome of the mission.
-
- PICARD (to Beverly)
- Doctor, we have you to thank for this outcome. Would you do the
- honors?
-
- Beverly points her finger in the air, in imitation of Picard.
-
- BEVERLY
- Engage.
-
-
- FADE OUT.
-
-
